GEO

Places of detention are marked by isolation, limited self-determination and a highly structured daily routine. Many people there lack spaces for personal expression, listening and creative development. Limited access to cultural activities also makes it harder to process inner tensions and to maintain one’s own dignity and connection with oneself and others.

It is precisely in such contexts that cultural and artistic expression can play an important role in promoting stability, enabling reflection and strengthening human connections.

About the Project

True to its commitment to empowering people even in sensitive life situations, Fondation Aline supports the GEO project. GEO is an artist, painter and writer from Cambrai who deliberately turns his daily life within the prison into spaces for creativity, exchange and passing on knowledge.

Thanks to the regular support of Fondation Aline, GEO has the means to provide art materials, continue his own work and offer cultural activities to other people in detention. The support creates a stable framework so that these activities can take place continuously.

The activities initiated by GEO create protected spaces within the prison for expression, listening and encounter. The “Literary Escapes” give participants access to books as well as learning materials for French and English, and promote concentration, language skills and inner calm.

In addition, breathing and relaxation exercises are offered to help reduce stress and cope more consciously with everyday life in detention. In another workshop, participants design postcards for their families. This strengthens emotional expression, helps maintain social relationships and fosters empathy.

Furthermore, GEO’s graphic works find their way to children and adults in palliative care. They bring comfort and humanity and carry the project’s impact far beyond the prison walls.

Overall, the project helps to preserve dignity, strengthen self-awareness and open up new prospects. Art thus becomes a concrete instrument of stabilisation, connection and personal development.
